A roof tile range with built in solar panels has been unveiled by electric car specialist Tesla. Chief executive Elon Musk believes the tiles are a more attractive way to harness energy than traditional solar panels. The tiles are made from glass and come in four different styles.
Power generated from the tiles is stored in Tesla’s Powerall 2 home battery system which costs £4,500. The launch comes ahead of a planned takeover of solar installer SolarCity.
Musk said: “This is sort of the integrated future. An electric car, a Powerwall and a solar roof. The key is it needs to be beautiful, affordable and seamlessly integrated.”
He added that target markets were house builders and those looking to replace their roofs.
