Ashe Construction has won a £22m project to redevelop the drab Park Place Plaza shopping precinct as part of Stevenage town centre’s wider regeneration plan.
The clever design by GSA Architects for the revamp project will see the firm strip two existing 1970s blocks of flats back to their concrete frames.
New steel frames will then be threaded, from the ground floor, through the existing concrete frame to provide two extra storeys of accommodation above the existing structure, totalling six storeys to both the north and south blocks.
This will allow for around 200 homes of one and two-bed flats. The central shopping boulevard between both blocks will then be fully refurbished for shops and restaurants.
Work will shortly get underway to strip back the existing building fabric.
