The Association for Specialist Fire Protection announced the winners of two new Awards at its inaugural Annual Awards Lunch on 8 December 2017, held at the Tower of London.
The sell-out event saw ASFP COO Niall Rowan award the Passive Fire Protection Advocate of the Year; and Fellowship of the ASFP – each judged by the ASFP’s Strategy Group, to have highly influenced passive fire protection during 2017.
Open to ASFP members only, Fellowship of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection was awarded to Martin Adie of main contractor Wilmott Dixon. As the first main contractor member of the ASFP, Mr Adie was described as a key driver in influencing the industry and raising the quality of installed passive fire protection.
He was recognised for his leadership and long-term awareness of the industry’s needs, demonstrated through a range of activities. These included the establishment of a Fire Protection training academy for Wilmott Dixon staff, in which they are taught about the role of passive fire protection with the aid of various practical exercises, including mock-ups of good and bad installations. Mr Adie was also praised for advocating the use of third party certificated products and installers, as well as writing several good practice articles for his employer’s internal quality magazine.
Passive Fire Protection Advocate of the Year was open to all involved in fire safety in the built environment and aimed to reward an individual who could demonstrate that they are a major advocate of high quality installed PFP. This prestigious award was presented to Hannah Mansell of the British Woodworking Federation for her dedication and enthusiastic promotion of fire doors as critical life safety products. Ms Mansell received the award to recognise her significant activities during 2017 including a huge number of presentations at conferences and exhibitions, as well as promoting the annual Fire Door Safety Week.
These first awards will pave the way for a wider range of Passive Fire Protection Awards in 2018, each aimed at highlighting excellence in passive fire protection and rewarding those who contribute to the advancement of awareness, quality and education within the sector. The new range of awards will be announced early in 2018 and nominations sought ahead of the 2018 Awards Lunch, scheduled to take place on Friday, 7 December 2018.
Ticket sales for the event raised £1,700 for the ASFP’s chosen charity, the Children’s Burns Trust. Members and guests also raised £2,135 for Grenfell charities through table donations.
