London is seeing a record number of residential buildings over 20 storeys high. There are more than 500 proposals going through the planning system. Five boroughs account for more than half of the tall buildings that are planned or under construction: Tower Hamlets (85); Greenwich (70); Southwark (48); Hammersmith & Fulham (40); and Newham (39). You can view a short video about these proposals below…
The London Assembly Planning Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss whether these developments will meet London’s genuine housing needs and what the Mayor needs to do in his London Plan to make sure these provide decent homes for our growing population.
Key questions expected to be raised during the meeting include:
- What are the implications for the trends in London’s tall buildings: their increasingly residential nature and the outward spread to the suburbs?
- How are London local authorities assessing applications and applying planning policy?
- Does the Mayor need to adopt a specifically ‘residential’ tall buildings policy?
Attending this meeting will be:
- David Hughes, Planning Policy Manager, London Borough of Harrow
- Barbara Weiss, Director, Barbara Weiss Architects
- Paul Wellman, Senior Analyst, Estates Gazette
- Adele Maher, Strategic Planning Manager, London Borough of Tower Hamlets
The meeting will take place on Wednesday 27 June at 10:00am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
