An innovative SMART construction project from Caledonian has been shortlisted in this year’s prestigious Offsite Awards.

The judging team shortlisted Caledonian in the Education Project of the Year category for the turnkey solution it provided on the striking new £2.5m sports complex at Ashville College in Harrogate. The project was completed by Caledonian in partnership with HLM Architects.

An approved supplier on the £50m Education Funding Agency (EFA) Framework, Caledonian design and build for schools, academies, and other educational facilities, as well as residential, commercial, Mod and MoJ.

Recognition in this major industry award sends a clear message that Caledonian is leading the field in terms of providing educational facilities with high quality, efficient and fast-build classrooms and campus estate buildings.

The Offsite judges recognised how Caledonian adopted an innovative and striking design at Ashville College, which had to work around tight site constraints, and all work undertaken within a live teaching environment.

The striking design surpasses the schools expectations and features a projecting entrance pod, and a large, open area gymnasium space with full height windows to maximise natural light. The design demonstrates how Caledonian is pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with its offsite construction.

Caledonian’s SMART construction solution is gaining popularity with architects because projects achieve an incredible 96% completion within the factory.

Benefits include assured levels of build quality, shorter build schedules, reduced working at height, reduced traffic to and from the site, and environmental gains all around, as well as ongoing building efficiencies and low maintenance.

“We already knew that our SMART construction techniques were shaking up the market. This been reflected in the project for Ashville College being shortlisted for this award,” said Dennis Hollingworth, Marketing Manager at Caledonian Modular.

Delivered to site 85% complete, the project for Ashville College minimised disruption to the live teaching environment – which has day and boarding pupils – along with the local residential neighbourhood.

This was a full turnkey service including demolition and ground-works – an existing tower on site was demolished and replaced with a new stair tower, with a second tower being constructed to provide access to the new first floor”.

Manufactured at the company’s Nottingham factory, the works also involved installation of a new reception and waiting area, new changing areas, office, treatment room, accessible changing area and WCs. The additional accommodation includes a new staff office, enlarged gym and training area as well as a new dance studio.

An approved supplier on the £50m Education Funding Agency (EFA) Framework, Caledonian design and build for schools, academies, and other educational facilities.

The Offsite Awards recognise outstanding examples of where modern methods of construction are delivering a better built environment.

The final of the Offsite Construction Awards will be held 6th March 2018 at Excel London.
