The High Court has ordered Galliford Try to pay nearly £2.5m to the client of the Mailbox shopping centre in Birmingham.

The court enforced an earlier adjudication in favour of the project client Mailbox Birmingham after it claimed for delays and liquidated damages.

Galliford Try was contesting the validity of the adjudication on several counts, which the High Court judge dismissed.

Galliford Try signed a £19m contract to revamp the shopping centre at the end of 2013.

The improvements included a new roof, larger public areas and improvements to the surrounding infrastructure.

Most of the works were carried out but on 1 March 2016 Mailbox terminated Galliford Try’s employment under the contract.

This brought the dispute between client and Galliford Try to a head about responsibility for delay, liability for liquidated damages, and the proper valuation of the final account and lawfulness of the termination by Mailbox.

The High Court has supported an adjudicator’s decision to award £2,477,152.
