CUPACLAD® 101 RANDOM has been installed to create a stunning entrance for an extension project on a brick bungalow in Poringland, Norfolk. The natural slate rainscreen cladding system was chosen as it offers a modern, long-lasting solution that complements the building’s existing brickwork.
The picturesque village of Poringland is just south of Norwich and derives its name from ‘Poor spring land’ due to the poor soil quality in the area. Located along one of the leading residential roads in the village is a bungalow being stylishly refurbished by the current owner, Scott Youngson.
Scott’s latest project involved extending the front of the home to create a stylish, more welcoming entrance and a bright office space. Using pre-existing architectural plans as a basis, Scott chose to design the porch himself, hiring local contractors to handle the groundwork, roof work and plastering. Regular communication with the original architect was maintained to ensure compliance with the relevant building regulations.
With a keen eye for design and detail, Scott meticulously researched property fronts and porches, seeking inspiration from magazines: “After researching slate and seeing other buildings, particularly how CUPACLAD® is used at the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences at Cambridge University, we were sold on the idea.”
Scott contacted CUPA PIZARRAS and was sent information and samples, which he tested on the porch. “It looked great,” Scott confirmed. He chose CUPACLAD® 101 RANDOM for its modern, sleek aesthetic that would dramatically update the home’s look. Its visual uniqueness appealed to them, especially as they had not seen this cladding style used much in their area. Additional benefits were its durability and longevity compared to timber cladding alternatives.
CUPACLAD® is fully BBA approved and 100% non-combustible, with an A1 fire-rating, offering a lifespan of over 100 years. A highly sustainable solution, CUPA PIZARRAS has been certified carbon neutral since 2020 in line with the PAS 2060 standard, and many of its products – including CUPACLAD® 101– are BRE Global verified.
CUPACLAD® was installed on the extension’s façade by Fitsall Roofing, using an aluminium system that requires almost no maintenance and reduces installation time. The cladding system combines different slate sizes to create a dynamic and distinctive design. CUPACLAD® 101 RANDOM features 50×25, 50×20, and 50×15 slates arranged horizontally and secured with invisible stainless steel fixings. This allows the natural beauty of the slate to take centre stage in the cladding system. Fitsall Roofing has previously installed CUPA PIZARRAS products, so the company effortlessly installed the cladding system in a matter of weeks.
The extension with CUPACLAD® 101 RANDOM rainscreen cladding has successfully transformed the bungalow’s entrance. The project is a testament to the homeowners’ dedication to quality, craftsmanship, attention to detail and innovative design choices. With plans to extend the cladding to other parts of their property, including the garages, this project showcases the enduring appeal and versatility of CUPACLAD® as well as its suitability for smaller projects.
“It’s completely changed the whole outlook of the building and created a real open feel to the entrance,” Scott concluded.
