A Derby regeneration project won a top award at the Insider East Midlands Property Dinner this week.

Castleward, the £100 million scheme by urban specialists, Compendium Living, scooped the title after beating off stiff competition from Trent Basin, Nottingham
Vijay Patel Building, De Montfort University, iHub, Infinity Park, Derby, Cathedral Court, Derby and the Engineering Building, University of Leicester.

Castleward is the redevelopment of 30 acres of brownfield land between Derby Midland Station and the intu shopping centre. The scheme is already emerging as a brand new community of sustainable homes and businesses.

Dave Bullock, Managing Director at Compendium Living said, “This is wonderful news for everyone who has worked on Castleward and for everyone who is living and working there now and we are delighted to have received this award.

“Castleward is living proof of successful regeneration and we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved with phase one. Plans are well underway for the development of phase two and this award gives us even more confidence that the project will continue to breathe new life into this are of Derby.”

The judges commented, “The mixed-use scheme has been a catalyst for the regeneration of a key site between the railway station and city centre. Buildings which have stood empty for years have now been snapped up by investors who have bought into the vision Castleward represents”.

Phase one of Castleward is currently all sold, however construction on the second phase will commence in the new year. In total it will create some 800 new homes and 34,500 sq ft of commercial space.

Castleward is no stranger to awards, securing two further industry accolades since construction began in 2013 including winning the Forum for the Built Environment East Midlands Best Regeneration Project in 2014 and the Derby Civic Society Commendation for Best New Build Development in 2016.

The scheme has also achieved a ‘good’ standard in the BREEAM [BRE Environmental Assessment Method] Communities accreditation, which measures the sustainability of new large scale development at the planning stage. It awards projects where economic, social and environmental sustainability has been carefully considered.

Additionally the development has secured the Built for Life status, which highlights well designed housing developments. Built for Life is based on the National Planning Policy Framework and aims to promote the creation of attractive, functional and sustainable places to live.
