Students from Doncaster College and North Lindsey College have recently had the opportunity to showcase their skills as part of a Channel 4 television series Guy Martin’s Building Britain. The episode is now airing on Channel 4’s digital channel, All 4.

The programme is part of a national campaign by voluntary organisation Volunteer it Yourself (VIY), with the main focus of the programme to highlight the construction skills shortage amongst women. Guy Martin’s mission was to undertake a renovation project on Café Indiependent at Scunthorpe, working with female students in joinery, painting and decorating.

Stuart Crabb, Construction Curriculum Manager of Doncaster College and University Centre states, ‘Building Britain was such an exciting project for our students to be involved in and it’s a great opportunity to showcase young women working in the construction trade. We have lots of really talented young females studying at Doncaster College across all trades from bricklaying, painting, joinery and others. The chance to work with Guy Martin and being able to experience such a hands on renovation project is something that the staff and students will remember for a long time’

Bethanie Shepard is currently on the Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry at Doncaster College and took part in the project with Guy Martin, here she explains why she is studying carpentry,

‘I decided to go to College after having my children and wanting to be independent.  Everything I have done has been for my boys and I want to teach them that a woman can be in the construction industry and do the job that a man would typically do’
