Two City College apprentices have claimed first and second place at the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year regional final.

Now in its 14th year, the prestigious painting and decorating competition celebrates young talent from across the UK.

The competitors had to demonstrate a wide range of skills to impress the judges and be in with a chance of making it to the national finals where they can win a cash reward, as well as a fantastic prize bundle of quality decorating tools.

Jess Cruiks, who is in the first year of her Apprenticeship with Spectrum Property Care, took the top spot at the competition. She said: “This is the first competition I have taken part in so I never expected to win. It was honestly a shock! Everyone else worked so hard on their own boards and the standard of work was so high. I have been thoroughly supported by the College and my employer in the lead up to this competition and got in a lot of practice which really paid off. I’m so happy.”

Skye-Ella Boswell came in second and is currently a painting and decorating apprentice with Stephen Cartwright. She said: “When I heard I was the runner-up, I was very pleased with myself and it has been a big confidence booster. The competition was a great way to broaden my skills and use a range of new tools.”
