London-based project manager Mirona Tomala, from international property and construction consultancy Gleeds, has been named RICS Matrics’ Young Surveyor of the Year 2021 at this year’s prize giving. In addition to being crowned overall winner, Mirona was also successful in the Project Management category of the awards, now in their eighth year, which recognise the UK’s most inspiring and influential chartered surveyors aged 35 or under.
Originally a languages graduate, Mirona joined the affordable housing sector after gaining her MSc qualification in project management before moving to Gleeds. She has now been with the business for over three years and acts as an ambassador for the brand, running leadership and communication sessions for graduates and new starters to demonstrate how a young surveyor can spearhead projects and help the entire team to excel.
The judging panel was impressed by her commitment to the profession as a whole, noting her desire to go above and beyond to develop both her own team and those in her wider network, as well as her dedication to delivering projects of the highest standard. They said, “Mirona is a driven and highly effective young surveyor who has a passion for improving the industry and leads by example…our profession is in a better place for having Mirona in it”.
Speaking about her achievements, Mirona says, “I am over the moon to have been selected as young surveyor of the year and equally delighted to have shared the stage with so many other talented young women from the industry. I am passionate about improving the representation of women in construction, co-founding the International Women’s Day networking event for RICS Matrics and sharing my journey to becoming a chartered surveyor with young people to inspire more girls to pursue careers in the built environment. I’m very proud to have been recognised as a role model for the next generation.”
The eighth annual RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year Awards were introduced by RICS President Clement Lau and hosted by broadcaster and presenter Jo Ankier at the Hilton Park Lane last week.
