On Wednesday 7th March His Royal Highness Prince Harry visited Shaylor Group’s project site at Silverstone – in his capacity as Royal patron of The Silverstone Experience – to officially start the construction programme on the £19.3 million project due for completion in spring 2019. Shaylor Group CEO Stephen Shaylor, Business Development Director Lana Shaylor, trustees of The Silverstone Experience, as well as local dignitaries and representatives from British motor sport gathered as Prince Harry launched the project by switching the Silverstone start lights from red to green.

The Silverstone Experience Centre, supported by National Lottery players through a £9.1m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, is expected to attract over 500,000 visitors a year and will bring to life the history of Silverstone and British motor sport through the creation of a dynamic, interactive and educational visitor experience.

The recently commenced works include the full refurbishment of an existing World War II aircraft hangar alongside the construction of a new two storey building to create an immersive experience. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths will be intrinsically woven into the fabric of the displays, building educational value into every aspect of the visit. The facilities will accommodate the Silverstone motorsport exhibition alongside the British Racing Drivers’ Club archive, educational facilities, café, atrium and reading room.

CEO Stephen Shaylor commented “It was an absolute delight to have HRH Prince Harry visit our site today and officially mark the beginning of the construction programme. This is an exceptional opportunity for the business and our team is excited to begin the intricate process of creating this state of the art facility. Our appointment builds upon our existing strong reputation and performance in the creation and renovation of public use spaces and education facilities. We have already built an incredibly strong relationship with the Silverstone Experience team and look forward to a mutually enjoyable experience in delivering this project.”

Sally Reynolds, CEO of The Silverstone Experience commented “After many years of planning and preparation today marks a key milestone in making the project a reality. At the end of last year we successfully concluded the public tender process and appointed Shaylor Group as our main contractor to carry out the hangar restoration and building work. We are delighted to welcome our Royal Patron Prince Harry to The Silverstone Experience to mark the start of this construction programme.”

Prince Harry also met students, a college located on the side of the famous racing track, which helps 14-18 year olds into careers in High Performance Engineering and Business & Technical Events.
