Developer Harworth has got outline planning for a major commercial redevelopment of the former Kellingley Colliery in Yorkshire.

The colliery in North Yorkshire was the last deep coal mine in the UK when it closed in December 2015.

Now Harworth plans to build 1.45m sq. ft of manufacturing and distribution space on the 151-acre site, located close to the M62.

The developer has spent the last twelve months undertaking site safety and security works, including demolishing redundant industrial structures, while masterplanning the site for future employment uses.

Owen Michaelson, Chief Executive of Harworth, said: “We are delighted to have secured a resolution to grant planning permission for this major redevelopment, which will bring jobs and investment to the region.

It is further evidence of the ability of our Capital Growth team to regenerate former industrial sites into sustainable developments for the benefits of local communities and underpins our strategy to drive long term value for shareholders.”
