John Turner Construction has been awarded the £2m Act III project at the Royal Court Theatre in the heart of Liverpool’s cultural and social life.
The grade II listed building refurbishment project, which will be managed from our Liverpool office, will create a new independent 150 seat basement venue, catering kitchen and link corridor whilst remaining open to the public.
Act III also focuses on the upper circle and balcony levels of the theatre creating better public spaces, improved access and better food and drink facilities along with larger and more comfortable seating.
During the 26 week project, which has received Arts Council funding, backstage improvements will include new modern dressing rooms and the installation of a lift. The stage area will be renovated along with the installation of a new communication system and fly-bars to increase the size and range of shows the theatre can present.
John Turner Construction’s in-house joinery facility will manufacture bespoke bars, balcony and balustrades.
Adjacent to St John’s shopping precinct, the 1186-seat Royal Court Theatre has a rich history dating back to 1826 when it first opened. The popular theatre was rebuilt in 1938 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The new art deco style performance hub has since presented a grandeur venue for national touring theatres, operas, ballets, pop music and comedy.
Redeveloping Liverpool’s heritage, The Royal Court Liverpool Trust is a registered charity and is responsible for the renovation of the historic landmark. Engaging with the local community, Royal Court has seen some legendary names perform over the last 100 years. Dame Judi Dench, who made her acting career debut at the Royal Court in 1957 has recently agreed to be a Patron of the Trust, supporting the theatre throughout the renovation.
