Residents of two community housing blocks in Ashton-under-Lyne are enjoying the benefits of a more energy efficient home, thanks to a major insulation retrofit featuring the premium performance of Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board.

After experiencing issues with the existing insulation installed in the early 1990s, Ashton Pioneer Homes has invested in upgrading the thermal performance of two of its twelve-storey properties, Grosvenor House and Ryecroft House. Installed by The Casey Group, 60 mm Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board was specified within the Alumasc Swisslab External Wall Insulation (EWI) System to create a highly-insulated envelope and reduce thermal bridging. Mark Gibbs from Alumasc explains the selection further:

“Swisslab is a direct-fix external wall insulation system particularly suited to refurbishing social housing properties. Our client chose to use Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board within this system due to its ability to achieve the target U-value of 0.30 W/m∙2K with a significantly reduced insulation thickness. This helped to reduce the structural loading and ensured that window reveals and sill depths were kept to a minimum.”

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board achieves outstanding thermal conductivities as low as 0.020 W/m∙K. It is designed to be installed behind lightweight polymer modified renders, such as the dry dash render applied to the flat blocks.

Michael Hyde, Operations Director at installers, The Casey Group, commented on the project:

“We worked closely with Ashton Pioneer Homes, Arcus Consulting LLP and Alumasc to ensure the installations were carried out efficiently and to a high standard. The overall thermal efficiency and aesthetics of the building have been improved to produce a modern building which will continue to benefit residents and the local community in the long term.”

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board features a fibre-free core and is manufactured with a blowing agent, which has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The product, when manufactured at Kingspan Insulation’s facility in Pembridge, is certified ‘‘Excellent’ under the demanding BES 6001: Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products standard and has a 2008 Green Guide Summary Rating of A+.
