Aberdeen City Council is investing in the installation of rainscreen cladding systems as part of a continuing programme of energy upgrades to its existing high-rise properties.

The current contract, being led by main contractor Keepmoat, involves a total of seven tower blocks on the Seaton estate in Aberdeen being given a full facelift with new aluminium windows, as well as cladding from CEP Architectural Façades. Knauf Insulation’s 130mm Earthwool RainScreen BGV Slabs are being installed.

The General Manager at CEP Architectural Façades, responsible for the Aberdeen contract, Neil Wilson, said: “The current phase of work on three tower blocks is progressing well, with Keepmoat installing our rainscreen cladding on the 17-storey structures. We design, manufacture and supply the systems, and chose to specify Earthwool RainScreen BGV Slabs from Knauf Insulation for this project as they met all of our criteria. We needed a product which would provide the U-value improvement specified by the client as well as being a cost effective and easy to install solution.

“From our detailed surveys we work out the existing U-value and therefore what uplift is required; and Knauf Insulation then calculates the precise thickness of product necessary utilising their 3D software; giving us ISO10211 compliant calculations.”

Aberdeen City Council’s Convener of Communities, Housing and Infrastructure, Councillor Neil Cooney said: “This project, in conjunction with others throughout the city, will go a long way to helping the council to meet its targets on providing safe and secure homes for its residents, the highest standards of energy efficiency and warmth: alleviating fuel poverty and reducing carbon emissions.”

The current programme of works which began in the summer of 2015 and is due to be completed in 2017, will see a total of approximately 22,000 square metres of rainscreen cladding and insulation installed.
