A multi-million pound plan to refurbish the operating theatres at Grimsby hospital is set to get underway this month.
The £1.9million project will see the refurbishment of two theatres, as well as the installation of a new laminar flow in one of the theatres.
Laminar flow is a type of ventilation system that is used in mainly implant surgery, such as orthopaedic or breast surgery, as it reduces the risk of infection.
The project will be undertaken in two phases and will cause some disruption to services. However, all patients needing emergency surgery will continue to be seen.
Karen Griffiths, chief operating officer at NLaG, said: “All emergency surgery will continue to go ahead as patient safety is of paramount importance. However, patients who are having planned, routine operations may be transferred to one of our other hospitals in either Scunthorpe or Goole to have their procedure done. We aim to keep any patient transfer to an absolute minimum as we understand that people prefer to have their operation close to home.”
Phase one of the project is due to start on January 18 when the new laminar flow will be installed. This work is due to be completed in March. Phase two will see work then start in March on the trauma and orthopaedic theatres and should be completed in June.
As well as works in the theatres a fire wall will also be installed across the main theatre corridor, as well as a new reception area and new purpose-built storage for orthopaedic equipment.
Stan Wood, theatres manager, said: “We have spent the past few months putting plans in place so we can reduce any unnecessary disruption to normal services during this time. Our main priority throughout the whole of the works is patient safety.”
