Contractor Novus has completed a major refurbishment project at Barnwell Academy in Sunderland. The project included an external façade upgrade to the 13,724 sq ft building taking in window replacements and upgrades to the building’s cladding and insulation to help reduce energy bills.

Barnwell Academy, in Sunderland, which has been part of the Barnwell Academy Trust since 2014, caters for boys and girls up to 11 and has space for around 280 pupils.

Asbestos removal was a large part of the works and Novus’ nine-strong team removed 883 sq ft of it throughout the seven-week project. The upgrade to the cladding and insulation should reduce Barnwell Academy’s energy bills by 25 per cent.

Phillip Cuthbertson, operations manager at Novus Property Solutions in Gateshead, said: “The work with Barnwell Academy has helped to modernise the school, which will reduce energy prices and contribute to a positive teaching environment for the pupils.”

Barnwell Academy’s head teacher, Ashley Emmerson, said: “The external façade upgrade at Barnwell Academy has transformed our school and created a welcoming, warm and safe environment for the children today, and in the future, to learn. The project was delivered efficiently and swiftly and ensured there was no disruption to teaching and learning. Our school community would like to thank Novus for their commitment, hard work and professionalism.”
