Novus Property Solutions has refurbished more than 140 bedrooms at a Glasgow university hall of residence over just three weeks.
Glasgow Caledonian University, which attracts more than 20,000 students from over 100 countries, boasts a modern, well-equipped campus at the very heart of the city. Caledonian Court, one of the university’s dedicated student halls of residence, is home to 650 students during term-time and has recently been refreshed by refurbishment specialist, Novus Property Solutions.
During the university’s long summer break, Caledonian Court is available for external bookings and has achieved Gold in the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBs) in recognition of its quality. This dual use makes keeping up to maintenance at Caledonian Court all the more essential but also reduces the time to complete such works.
There were just three weeks of the summer break available to refurbish the accommodation ahead of the new term, due to guests staying at Caledonian Court for the World Pipe Band Championships, which were held in Glasgow over the summer. The team of six Novus operatives worked diligently to redecorate 146 student bedrooms as well as all the communal staircases in that time.
Dulux Diamond Eggshell, which is highly resistant to typical household stains and provides an extremely tough finish, was applied throughout to ensure the bedrooms and communal areas would remain in excellent condition for longer. The bedroom walls and ceilings were painted in a warm neutral magnolia while brilliant white was used in the communal areas.
Novus also repainted some exterior garden furniture and an office suite of 22 offices for the university as part of the project.
James Wilson, contracts manager from Novus Property Solutions, who took the lead on the project, commented: “The World Pipe Band Championships taking place over the summer meant many of the rooms we were supposed to be repainting had been rented out to paying hotel guests. So we had to find a way to work around this without compromising the schedule or disturbing the guests.
“We completed an above required number of rooms per week in order to meet the deadline, ensuring we worked away from any occupied rooms and used low odour, water-based paint to reduce the smell of paint. We completed the majority of rooms in one go before returning immediately after the event to complete the project.”
