International lighting studio Nulty has designed an exterior and interior lighting scheme for a residential renovation in London, working in close partnership with One-World Design Architects to illuminate the property’s expansive dual vaulted roof extension.
The lighting scheme was designed to realise the architect’s vision of bringing the exterior straight into the home by harnessing biodiversity to add life to the roof and walls.
Nulty’s design response creates permeability between the garden and open plan living area and brings a sense of contrast and drama to the overall design.
One of the highlight features of the renovation, the property’s double-height curved roofs, floods the interior with natural light throughout the day and forms an eye-catching focal point when illuminated at night.
The team concealed lighting within the structure of the roof to preserve views from inside and outside.
The system features full scene setting controls that allow the scheme to be illuminated to its fullest to celebrate the property’s architectural form, or subtly lit to evoke a more intimate, relaxed ambiance.
The lighting scheme also gives primacy to a green wall feature, which runs straight from the garden into the interior living space and forms a strong visual link between the two areas.
Nulty placed discreet up lights along the expanse of the green wall to softly illuminate the foliage and bring continuity to the design.
Within the interior, the greenery has been lit from both above and below to create an impressive focus area.
Elsewhere within the large interior footprint, the team illuminated the verticals of the space to create a bright backdrop that makes the space feel light and welcoming.
Adjustable spotlights have been strategically placed within the roof to provide accent lighting above the kitchen island, whilst preserving the clean lines and curved form of the architecture.
Both miniature downlights and integrated lighting within the kitchen joinery have been used to light the more functional areas of the high-specification cabinetry and materials.
One of the standout features of the kitchen, a stone and timber island unit, has been lit with a concealed linear LED strip that draws the eye to the inherent beauty of the wood.
