Leading engineering consultancy Pell Frischmann, local contractors CR Reynolds, and East Riding of Yorkshire Council have won the Institution of Civil Engineers Certificate of Excellence award for its work on Phase Two of the Brough Relief Road in East Riding, Yorkshire.
The award – for projects worth £5m and over – was presented at the Institution of Civil Engineers Annual Yorkshire & Humber Awards on Friday 15 March, held at Sheffield City Hall.
Pell Frischmann was the designer for all multi-disciplinary aspects of the project including highway and drainage design, bridge design and environmental mitigation.
The ICE annual awards recognise achievement, excellence or innovation in civil engineering projects in the past two years. Criteria for the awards include the value and impact on society, sustainability, health and safety, quality of design, best practice, difficulty and response, and collaboration.
The project is key in helping deliver the £200m Brough South development – a mixed-use residential, retail, leisure and commercial scheme – on the south of the railway line. The project extended the existing relief road and provides a link to the 125-acre site.

It also cleared the way for design work to start on Phase Three of the project, linking Brough Relief Road to the Humber Enterprise Park, removing traffic from Skillings Lane, and easing congestion in the centre of Brough.
Once completed, Brough South is expected to include 750 new homes, new healthcare facilities and care facilities for the elderly, a new primary school, natural play environments, supermarket and retail units and an ecological zone adjacent to the Humber. Brough South will also create more than 700 new jobs once completed.

Pell Frischmann has also designed other projects in the East Yorkshire area including the Beverley Southern Relief Road, Willerby and Derringham Flood Alleviation Scheme (WaDFAS) and the A164 Improvements scheme.
