The Grade II listed building which houses the City Market is to recieve a £3.5m refurbishment. Currently in consultation phase, market traders and the public are being asked to put forward their views on proposed designs for the revamp which aims to assess the external and interior needs of its users as well as address maintenance issues.
Amougst the work to be undertaken will be refurbishment of the main roof and replacement of flat roof areas on adjacent buildings, refurbishment of external wall cladding, the replacement of existing roof lights, replacing external lighting and remedial work to ceiling and internal areas. Fascias will be replaced, as will rainwater pipes and flooring. Accessibility will be improved for all users with a lift to the first floor and remodelling of existing entrances.
Plymouth City Market was built between 1957 and 1959 to the design by local architects, Walls and Pearn, and recieves over a million visitors each year.
