Essential basement waterproofing work on the Wordsworth Museum in Grasmere has now been completed by experts, Wise Basement Systems. Structural waterproofing experts were required to waterproof both the basement of the historic building, which was first built in the early 17th century, and the new extension to the museum.
Heavy rainfall and flooding in the Lake District area during January and February presented a challenge for the project. However, Wise was able to be pump out water from the site so waterproofing work was completed to the highest standard. There are only a limited number of Certified Surveyors in Structural Waterproofing (CSSW) in the UK, and Wise Basement Systems was selected as a contractor to complete the project, due to the level of qualifications and expertise they hold in this field.
Keeping history protected
The original Wordsworth Museum building, Dove Cottage, is embedded into a hillside, and is at increased risk of water ingress due to rain runoff into the rear of the original and new section of the buildings. Extensive waterproofing work was required to protect the building and prevent water damage, such as damp, mould and wood rot. To best protect it from damage, Wise installed a bespoke waterproofing system to comply with BS8102 – the code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground.
In order to complete waterproofing, Wise experts started by examining the original structure for leaks. Any gaps identified were plugged with hydraulic cement to stop water entering before the building could be full waterproofed.
Stuart Mcginlay CSSW CSTDB at Wise Basement Systems said: “The Wordsworth Museum basement waterproofing required a great deal of care and precision. When completing work on a building like this, it is essential that all activity preserves the historic character and integrity of the building, while at the same time protecting it from any future damage.
“Our waterproofing design as per BS8102 2009 incorporated a Type A barrier protection system, and a Type C cavity drainage system, completely compliant with the above British standard. With this comprehensive waterproofing system designed and fully installed, the Wordsworth Museum is best protected against water ingress and the potential damage it could inflict, preserving the historic structure for generations to come.”
