Designed to unlock the potential of Custom and Self Build housing in Scotland, this event ‘first’ for Scotland takes place at Glasgow’s iconic Lighthouse on Wednesday 20 June.
The Custom & Self-Build Expo is brought to you by the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA), the Right to Build Taskforce and Wood for Good in partnership, and is sponsored by BuildStore.
The programme has been specially curated to provide information, support and advice for Scotland’s Custom, Self Build and community-led housing sector.
It is a must-attend event for home-builders, architects and designers, landowners, local authorities, housing trusts, developers and community groups working to diversify housing choice, and is of special interest to housing associations working on affordable new routes to housing supply.
Supported and co-hosted by Glasgow City Council, the programme includes insightful presentations reflecting the spectrum of Custom, Self Build and community-led housing, and includes a diverse range of topics, organisations and examples of best practice.
The city council’s Head of Housing & Regeneration, Patrick Flynn, and Self Build Coordinator, Angela Doran, will be giving an update on Glasgow’s Custom and Self Build scene on the day.
“We are delighted that Scotland’s first Custom & Self Build Expo is being staged in the heart of the city,” said Councillor Kenny McLean, City Convenor for Neighbourhoods, Housing and Public Realm at Glasgow City Council. “The council is keen to promote alternative, affordable models of housing. Glasgow’s population is growing and we want to retain people within the city by providing for growing households.
“Self-build provides the opportunity for people to work together – sharing costs and building relationships as they build their houses. Self-builders invest emotionally in their homes and are more likely to stay in the community for the long term.”
One of the Task Force’s core target areas is to help grow Custom Build and community-led housing in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as they work to develop their own approaches to diversifying their housing supply markets.
Last month’s Right to Build London Expo, held alongside Grand Designs Live, welcomed a highly engaged audience. One Expo delegate told us that the event was an “Excellent day discussing the opportunities of self and custom build housing which can and will help tackle the broken housing market in the UK.”
