O. Seaman & Son Ltd, trading as Seamans Building, was awarded the title of Best Local Builder or Traditional Craftsperson at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar.
A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects and teams from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design. Seamans Building was recommended for this prestigious award by the building control team at St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “When local builders are nominated for our awards by the Local Authority Building Control Team, it really demonstrates what our awards are about.”
“Our building excellence awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”
Seamans Building was nominated specifically for the works carried out at The Cupola House in Bury St Edmunds. Initially called in to assist with protection and demolition works following the devastating fire that substantially destroyed large parts of the Grade I listed building, they were subsequently appointed as Main Contractor for the rebuild, where their directly employed craftsmen and teams of skilled specialist subcontractors worked with Planners, Building Control, Historic England and many other interested parties to produce a quality building, constructed to current regulations whilst replicating the original style and details of the original building.
This company has an impressive and diverse portfolio of high quality projects. The judges were impressed by their commitment to using regular trade teams and providing in-house training and apprenticeships. The ability to deliver the successful restoration of historic and outstanding contemporary buildings shows how they have invested in the necessary skills to achieve excellence and consistency of quality.
The Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 10th November 2017 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by Gyles Brandreth, writer, broadcaster, actor, and former Conservative Member of Parliament. Over 800 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.
