Stamford-based architectural firm Arctica (www.arctica.co.uk) is securing the future of industrial architecture with the appointment of an apprentice.

Calum Terry (19) from Grantham has been appointed as an assistant cost consultant with the firm. At the same time, he will be undertaking a formal day release course in quantity surveying at Peterborough Regional College.

Commenting on his apprenticeship Calum said: “I have had previous experience in a physical construction trade as a plasterer. I chose this apprenticeship to experience the management side of the industry. I also enjoyed mathematics in my further education, so this suited me well.

“I am assisting Arctica with real client work, which involves creating budgets, measuring from drawings to create tenders, monitoring costs and creating contract documents. Although I was a little daunted by client visits when I first started, I have gained confidence and have found that the clients and contractors are very welcoming and interested to engage in conversation about what I’m doing for Arctica. Going to site is now an exciting part of the Job and improves my confidence every time.”

Calum’s tutor, Robert Farquhar, said: “Calum is an excellent student; he works diligently on coursework and strives to produce work to the highest standard. Calum consistently achieves Distinction grades for all assignments and is on track to achieve the highest grade possible for his BTEC level 3 diploma, that is D*D*.

“All of Calum’s tutors speak very highly of him and mention his work ethic, standard of work and academic abilities. He is a very hardworking, polite and well-mannered student who is developing transferrable skills which will hold him in good stead for future study. At PRC we are confident that Calum will have a successful career ahead of him.”

Arctica director Niall McQuitty added: “Calum is employed as an assistant cost consultant on a generous salary with all the bonuses that every other employee receives. As an added incentive we offered him a unique bonus if he produces the best grades at college.

“Calum is an asset to the team. We want him to achieve his goals and, once his apprenticeship finishes, I hope he will become a fully qualified chartered surveyor.

“We are pleased to be helping to assure the future of our industry by getting involved with training and apprenticeships. Our relationship with educational institutions, like Peterborough Regional College, and apprenticeship candidates like Calum, is an important part of this process.”
