When it comes to clean, modern lines and eco-credentials, insulated render gives other types of cladding a good run for their money, as Justin Price, sales director at Aliva UK explains

The £15m headquarters of Wrexham-based telephone answering firm Moneypenny is a deservedly award-winning project. Not only is the interior fit-out an exemplar for all UK companies, the exterior is stunning in its classic simplicity, with green credentials to match.

Aliva worked with AEW Architects to craft a clean, crisp façade that wraps in unbroken lines around the curved exterior of the building, using 5,000sqm of our Termok8 insulated render system. The result? A finish that is withstanding the worst of the British weather – imperative in the building’s semi-rural location – and will continue to look great.

The British Board of Agrement-certified render was chosen for its excellent thermal insulation credentials. The render’s self-cleaning and anti-algae staining properties will also ensure the building maintains its pristine finish for years to come.

Insulated render is of course better known as a perfect cladding material for major refurbishment projects, particularly social housing. It is cost-conscious, straightforward to apply (with expert supervision) and keeps its clean good looks for years. It can also be combined with brick slips to enable restored buildings to stay true to their surroundings.

In Salford, Greater Manchester, we delivered a cost-effective, high quality insulated render façade for a 1960s tower block that was being upgraded and modernised inside and out to meet current building and thermal value regulations. Wade House is part of the Barton Village project in Eccles, Salford, where major regeneration work is underway. Aliva UK was brought in by architects HLP Design to re-clad the first of several blocks, to ensure that quality standards for the exteriors remained high.

The architect chose our Termok8 insulated render system in bespoke salmon pink plus blue smooth traditional brick slips and lightweight stock effect brick slips to over-clad the ten-storey block. The architect needed a lightweight solution to create a first-class aesthetic and thermal fabric for the building. The brick slips were chosen to complement the existing brick structure and surrounding buildings. The result was a bright, modern finish that transformed the look of an ageing building into an exemplar for 21st Century high-rise living.

Because of the height and sheer expanse of the building, the architect required an insulated render that gave a consistent finish and strong, durable colour to ensure that the building kept its looks. Aliva’s Termok8 insulated render delivers all this, plus the self-cleaning properties that ensure the local community will remain proud of its renewed living space for years to come.

Given that more than a third of the heat in a building is lost through its walls, high-quality insulated render that delivers a stylish, contemporary finish is a must for any energy-conscious building project. These contrasting buildings show that there is no limit to an architect’s dreams when it comes to using this versatile finish.
