The Screwfix Foundation and Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) are working together to support the local community of Dagenham by fixing and improving a property run by Outreach Homes.

With a grant of £21,000 from the Screwfix Foundation, VIY will deliver the refurbishment of the property, while mentoring young people disengaged or excluded from mainstream education to learn a trade skill by helping to fix local community spaces and places.

The Screwfix Foundation and VIY will work together to create a welcoming environment at Outreach Homes by renovating multiple areas of the building, including re-painting, and installing new flooring in communal areas, bedrooms, offices, and kitchen.

Outreach Homes provide semi-independent accommodation for vulnerable young people in the local community. However, their building in Dagenham is in desperate need of improvement.

The project starts on Monday 13th May and will take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete. To make this project a reality, volunteers are needed.

Tradespeople, multi-trade and serious DIYers from the local area are welcome to help for as little as one day, by mentoring young people, sharing skills, and supporting their community for a good cause.

Claire Flory, The Screwfix Foundation Manager says: “We are extremely proud to support VIY and the community of Dagenham. As a grant giving charity that donates to charities and not-for-profit organisations across the UK to fix and repair facilities, we wanted to contribute and be involved in this exciting initiative.

“Screwfix colleagues from the area will also give their time to lend a hand. It would be fantastic if tradespeople who are interested in lending their trade could pop into one of the local Screwfix stores and talk to the team, any help is needed.”

Tim Reading, CEO at VIY said: “We’re grateful our cross-sector partnership model allows us to work with a range of organisations who share in our mission to help fix up valuable community spaces, just like the Screwfix Foundation on this project improving valuable supported housing for local young people.”
