San Remo Towers in Boscombe has been restored to its post-war glory after Novus Property Solutions carried out a programme of external render repairs and decorations.
The Grade II listed flats, located between Boscombe’s high street shops and the award-winning beach at Boscombe Pier, were constructed in 1935 and designed by British architect Hector Hamilton.
The building’s exterior features a unique design, with yellow-ish pink brick used alongside natural terracotta roofing materials and polychrome wall motifs in red, yellow, blue and green, and Novus won a contract to deliver a full external refurbishment to the popular apartment block.
In August 2015, work began on the six-storey building, which was accessed using scaffolding, cherry pickers and scissor lifts. The building’s location on the summit of a cliff overlooking Boscombe Bay leaves it exposed to weather conditions that made the refurbishment challenging during the winter months, but Novus operatives completed the works on schedule.
San Remo Towers was created during the boom in the seaside holiday market after the Second World War, when Boscombe enjoyed a period of prosperity as holidaymakers from around the United Kingdom headed to the south coast. Now, residents can once again enjoy the full effect of Hector Hamilton’s ‘Los Angeles Spanish style’ design, thanks to the repairs and refurbishments made by Novus.
Tom Green of Greenward Associates, who managed the project commented: “San Remo Towers needed a great deal of care and attention to bring it back to its former glory. The works required a competent contractor with a wide skills base, not only to deal with the different remedial works required but also to correct the significant amount of damage caused by water ingress. The previous decorating project that had been carried out five years previously, had been poorly executed and masked a number of defects which required correction.
“Novus worked sensitively around the residents, keeping us informed throughout to ensure that any disruption was kept to a minimum, which made the whole process smoother from the start.
“I’m pleased with the quality of the finish and the attention to detail produce by Novus, they went the extra mile to ensure that the residents were delighted with the end result too.”
