The fire which ripped through the University of Bristol on January 5th during a refurbishment project is not as severe as initally thought.
A statement from the university said: “Work to refurbish the Fry Building, which was damaged by fire at the start of January, is continuing and our priority now is to ensure the refurbishment project progresses as quickly as possible.
“Thankfully the damage was not as substantial as first thought. The fire largely affected the roof and top floor of the south block only, with further water damage on the lower floors”.
The Fry Building, which will be the new home of the university’s School of Mathematics, was due to reopen in September 2018 but has now been set back.
Bristol University has not said when the building will be open. Discussion is under way with the contractor Balfour Beatty and insurers to establish how the fire will effect the refurbishment and to pin down the new schedule.
