WORK will start next month on brand new council homes on the long-vacant Southsea Community Centre site, in Somerstown.
Portsmouth City Council hopes that the first residents will move into the 23 one-and-two-bedroom flats on the site in St Pauls Square next summer.
Cllr Darren Sanders, cabinet member for housing, said this was more evidence of the council’s commitment to increasing Portsmouth’s high quality housing stock by building the new homes the people of Portsmouth needed at prices they could afford.
“Building new homes is crucial to tackling the housing shortage in Portsmouth so that’s what we’re doing,” Cllr Sanders added.
“This site has been vacant for too long and we are keen to get people in there as quickly as possible. This is not the only site we are bringing forward. In fact we are well advanced with our plans to develop sites across Portsmouth.
“We are investing on our land by building new homes. We will continue to do this among the many other measures we are taking to help provide homes Portsmouth people can afford.”
In addition to this site, the council is nearing completion of Fred Francis Close – 30 houses and eight flats it has built on land it owns in Havant. Plans are also being developed to build on the following council-owned sites, subject to public consultation and planning permission:
- Brewery House, Hambrook Street.
- The former records office site, Museum Road.
- An office and retail site in Arundel Street.
- Land cleared following the demolition of Northern Parade Clinic, Doyle Avenue.
